Delta Science Modules You and Your Body Complete Kit, Edition 3, Grades 5 to 6
Description
Comprehensive, affordable and effective, Delta Science Modules Edition 3 (DSM-3) Kits provide an inquiry-based, hands-on approach to teaching a specific science topic through the use of activities and investigative equipment. With the Delta Science Modules You and Your Body Complete Kit, your lass will get to delve into all the various systems of the human body through hands-on experiments. First your students will examine the skeletal system, identifying major bones and joints. Next, they will replicate the arm's muscle coordination and measure reaction time. They will also model the pumping action of the heart, calculate lung capacity, and investigate respiration. Then, students will find out why we have different types of teeth and how to keep them healthy. They will discover that skin is exposed as a versatile body part, not only for cooling and protecting us, but also for sensing our environment. Students will discover how the 5 senses work to perceive and evaluate incoming information. Finally, because the body runs on fuel, students will get to test foods for nutrient content and practice reading nutrition labels.
Along with the kit activities, the You and Your Body Delta Science Reader (and complementary Skillbuilders booklet that helps students practice reading/grammar/writing/vocabulary skills with the content from the Delta Science Reader) will get students to read more in-depth about how cells (the body’s building blocks) make up tissues, organs, and organ systems, as well as explore some of the body's main systems (skeletal, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and nervous). The book also touches briefly on the endocrine, immune, reproductive, and excretory systems, features biographies of two medical pioneers, Dr. Charles Drew and Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, and concludes with a look at how reflexes work.
