Delta Science Modules Simple Machines Complete Kit, Edition 3, Grades 5 to 6
Description
Comprehensive, affordable and effective, Delta Science Modules Edition 3 (DSM-3) Kits provide an inquiry-based, hands-on approach to teaching a specific science topic through the use of activities and investigative equipment. In the Delta Science Modules Simple Machines Complete Kit, your class will determine the mathematical relationship between force and work by measuring force as they lift, push, and pull load. Students will build and/or operate classroom versions of the 6 simple machines: lever, wheel and axle, pulley, inclined plane, wedge, and screw. They’ll then investigate how (and how much) each one makes work easier by magnifying, modifying, transferring, or changing the direction of the applied force. By calculating such factors as gear ratios and the negative effects of friction, students will discover the tradeoff between force and distance, as well as identify and examine household or other everyday simple machines.
Along with the kit activities, the Simple Machines Delta Science Reader (and complementary Skillbuilders booklet that helps students practice reading/grammar/writing/vocabulary skills with the content from the Delta Science Reader) will get students to further explore the world of simple machines and the energy that makes them work. Students will: read about the 6 simple machines (the inclined plane, the lever, the wheel and axle, the pulley, the wedge, and the screw) and understand the difference between simple and compound machines; “meet” ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes and modern inventor Lillian Gilbreth in biographical sketches, and discover how they put simple machines to work; and also read about the scientific formula for calculating work, the many levers in the human body, and how a roller coaster works.
Delta Science Modules Edition 3 (DSM-3) consist of a total of 59 assorted kits ranging from Grade K to 8 levels, each with a step-by-step teacher guide, student readers, 12-14 interconnected activities, and enough equipment to serve up to 32 students. Select kits also contain a pre-paid coupon for Living materials. Educators have the flexibility to have students follow the detailed activities that are provided, or customize their own curriculum plan with the equipment provided.
