Comprehensive, affordable and effective, Delta Science Modules Edition 3 (DSM-3) Kits provide an inquiry-based, hands-on approach to teaching a specific science topic through the use of activities and investigative equipment. In the Delta Science Modules Butterflies and Moths Complete Kit, students will get to explore the colorful, captivating world of moths and butterflies. From tiny larvae on beds of food to fluttering adults in a mesh tower, real-life butterflies and moths will grow and develop with your students' care! Teams of two will raise a painted lady butterfly and a wax moth, observing metamorphosis from larva to pupa to adult. When adults emerge from chrysalis and cocoon, students will study their features and behaviors. Some may even see a new generation of larvae hatch! Students will also record observations in logbooks and learn about survival adaptations, camouflage, mimicry, and ultra-sensitivity to odors. The unit even includes a field trip to collect and identify wild larvae, as well as hints for distinguishing between butterflies and moths at every stage of their life cycles. If needed, there is a replacement prepaid Plant and Animal Living Material Card (sold separately; Item # 270-3700).
Along with the kit activities, the Butterflies and Moths Delta Science Reader (and complementary Skillbuilders booklet that helps students practice reading/grammar/writing/vocabulary skills with the content from the Delta Science Reader) will help students will read and learn even more about the life cycles of butterflies, moths, and other insects. They will: learn the identifying characteristics of all insects; discover the similarities and differences between moths and butterflies; read about a biologist who studies Monarch butterflies; and find out about the amazing migration of the Monarch butterfly.
Delta Science Modules Edition 3 (DSM-3) consist of a total of 59 assorted kits ranging from Grade K to 8 levels, each with a step-by-step teacher guide, student readers, 12-14 interconnected activities, and enough equipment to serve up to 32 students. Select kits also contain a pre-paid coupon for Living materials. Educators have the flexibility to have students follow the detailed activities that are provided, or customize their own curriculum plan with the equipment provided.
