Newpath Learning Chromosomes 3-D Model Kit, 1 Teacher Guide and 5 Student Guides
Description
Models are powerful tools for teaching science as they provide useful simplifications of structures and processes, helping to make the unseen seen and the complex simple.
Using the colorful model-making kit, your students will enjoy learning about the relationship between chromosomes, genes and DNA.
First they make their models of maternal and paternal chromosomes and a cell nucleus. Then they will look at how chromosomes are stored in the nucleus and learn that they have a copy of each chromosome from their mother and father. Next, they’ll look at how chromosomes are made of long strands of DNA that are coiled very tightly around proteins. Lastly, will next see the relationship between chromosomes and genes.
Through this process, they will see how genes are stored in DNA and look at how chromosomes can carry different versions of a gene to determine such traits as eye color. The Model Making Kit includes enough materials for students to assemble up to 5 paper models working cooperatively. The comprehensive Teacher Resource Guide included provides illustrated readings, activities, key vocabulary and an assessment, along with teaching opportunities for students to Engage, Explore, Explain, Extend and Evaluate their understanding of the concepts presented.
