Shrink Art Sampler

Lesson Plan, Grades 6-12, Art, Science, Drawing, Mixed Media

Description

Lesson Plan and Artwork by Annette Johnson

Students will select at least three of their favorite artists or three works of art that inspire them. Using Sakura and Grafix products, students create their own interpretation of the artwork. Through a thermal process, students will transform and shrink their artwork to assemble a final sampler.

Objectives

  • Study chosen artwork, noting how the artist used color and media to create the piece of art.
  • Discuss why they chose the artist, what the students found inspiring, what media they used to create the work.
  • Experiment with all media on various shrink film surfaces, discussing how each surface works with different media.

Instructions

1

Cut Grafix Shrink Film: matte, sanded and clear into 5” x 7” pieces. Each 8 1/2” x 11” sheet will yield two 5” x 7” pieces with 1 1/2” scraps.

2

Each student will receive six 5” x 7” pieces of film, two of each surface. 1 piece of each surface should be set aside to complete 3 finished pieces of artwork.

3

Using 1 piece of each surface of shrink film, students will try all Sakura products: Cray-pas, Microperm pens, Pentouch Paint Markers*, and Souffle Pens on all three Grafix Shrink Film surfaces.

4

Students will shrink test pieces to determine how successful each Sakura product was on each of the Grafix films. Shrink according to package directions.

5

Students should complete 3 final pieces of finished artwork. More than one medium can be used for each finished piece of artwork. When completed bake final pieces of artwork according to package directions.

6

Mount finished artwork onto a mat board.

7

Discuss the work and how well each Sakura product worked on each Grafix Shrink Film surface.

Discuss the work and how well each Sakura product worked on each Grafix Shrink Film surface. Notes: After removing flattened samples from the oven do not touch them until completely cool. The surface of these samples will be soft and they need to cool completely to set the medium on the surface of the shrink art pieces.

Bake all items in a well ventilated area especially the paint markers.

*When using the white Pentouch marker apply after baking only. If baked it becomes a powder and can fly onto other surfaces of your work. Using only after baking eliminates this issue.
