Mayco Holy Cow

Description
This cow is a basic hand building piece which incorporates the element of design and structure. Cows are referred to as the foster mothers of the human race because they produce most of the milk that people drink.
Objectives
- Encourage kids to find out how cows have become important in our lives in the past 400 years. Learn the different kind of cows there are and how some societies honor and treat them with as nobility.

Instructions

Build the cylinder from a soda can, but remove the cylinder before putting on the bottom.

Cut two 3" circles from clay, holding them in the palm of your hand, press your thumb into the shape to turn the flat piece of clay to a convex shape, allow to dry to firm up, and then attach to the open ends of the cylinder. Score and slip together, cut off any excess.

Use some clay scraps to raise the shape from the table about 1 1/2", these are just temporary.

Roll coils for the legs 3" for the front legs and 2 3/4" for the back legs, slip attach to the body as shown. Score in a section for the hooves with a needle tool.

Make a 2 1/2" oval pinch pot in a ball shape for the head. Work on the head before attaching to the body of the cow.

Cut triangle shapes for the ears, and form horns from coils. Cut out oval shapes for the eyes, score in a section for the eyelids. Roll tiny balls for the pupils and attach to the eyes.

Score in a section for the muzzle.

Slip a flattened coil for the neck to the body of the cow, then slip attach the head to the neck; make sure to vent the head and the body of the cow.

Roll a coil for the tail, score and slip attach to the back of the cow.

Remove the clay pieces that hold up the cow then attach a small pinch pot shape to the underside for the utter.

Allow to dry.

Bisque fire to shelf cone 04/05.
Painting Directions:

Apply 2 coats of Stroke & Coat Tuxedo to the spots on the cow, the hooves, back of the ears and eyelids.

Apply 2 coats of Stroke & Coat Cotton Tail to the eye area; apply 2 coats of Stroke & Coat Java Bean to the iris and 2 coats of Tuxedo to the pupil. Add a dot of Cotton Tail for a highlight.

Apply 2 coats of Stroke & Coat Birthday Suit to the inside of the ears then fl oat some Java Bean to shade.

Apply a wash of Birthday Suit to the horns muzzle and utters. Detail the mouth with Tuxedo.

Apply 2 coats of Jungle Gems Ink Spots to the remaining areas of the cow.

Apply Clear Glaze of choice to the Stroke & Coat areas slightly overlapping the Ink Spots. Allow to dry.

With a Damp sponge, remove any glaze from the bottom of the feet.

Fire to shelf cone 05/06. Use the following three-point rubric to evaluate students' work during this lesson.
- 3 points: Students demonstrated a strong understanding of the dynamics of clay and textural applications; understood glaze application and the process; answered all questions; provided at least one similarity and one difference among the diverse cultural amulets.
- 2 points: Students demonstrated a satisfactory understanding of the dynamics of clay and the textural applications; Understood glaze applications and the process; answered most of the questions; provided at least one similarity and one difference among the diverse cultural amulets.
- 1 point: Students demonstrated a poor understanding of the dynamics of clay and textural applications: did not understand glaze applications and process; answered very few of the questions; had difficulty identifying any similarities of difference between the cultures.
